Coconut Wax Candle Tutorials
Materials You Will Need:
- A glass container to hold and melt your wax.
- Wax Melting Pot : A dedicated clean pot, double-boiler, or slow cooker allows gradual melting of coconut wax flakes or blocks into liquid form for pouring at around 160°F.
- Coconut Wax: Using 500g here. It is up to you.
- Wicks: You can pick them up at local craft store. There are so many options to choose from , there are cotton wicks with metal tabs, or you can pick simple cotton wicks from Ohcans Candle
- Thermometer : to monitor the ideal temperature for pouring candles, and it is to remeber that the optimal temperature for pouring wax is below 185°F
Proper Procedures
Step 1: preparation for candle making
You want to set up your working area, you can lay some paper towel and clean wipes to prevent and catch any wax spills. Another good tip to keep in mind is to Open a window or use a fan to keep air circulation. You want to keep the operation space to be ventilated and clean before you begin. You want to keep all your candle making suppies organized in order.
Securing The Proper Placement Of Your Wick
Here we use bamboo wicks, because it is durable and clean. You can simply stick your wick on to the bottom of your glass container. You just firmly press it on to the center for 1 minute as shown below.
Step 2:Melting You Coconut Wax
Once the wax becomes fully liquid, check the temperature is between 48°-52°C using a thermometer before adding in essential oils.Stir the mixture continuously over medium heat until the soy wax has melted into liquid wax. Doing so prevent burning off of the scent throw. It is optional to add essential oils for beginner. Then, carefully add in essential oils at 8-10% of the total wax weight, to achieve the desired intensity of scent. You want to porportion the amount of wax, so pour a ratio of 3 soy wax flakes to 1 coconut oil into a glass jar. You can simply combine them together.
Step 3: Pouring You Coconut Wax into Glass Jars
You want to ensure that the temperature has cooled to between 40°-46°C. You want to hot wax to cool off before pouring into a glass contianer. To acheive a better effect, the wax may be in a thick state yet still in its liquid form before pouring.
Step 4:Wait For Your Coconut Wax to Turn Into Candles
After you have poured your candle. You can sit back and relax. You can wait overnight before trimming off the wick to a proper length with scissors. You should trim 1~2 cm above your candle wax. Finally, your coconut candl wax to ready for storage. Personally, I wait for approximate 3 days for my handmade candles to cure before burning. Essentially, during its candle curing process, you are waiting for the fragrance and essential oil to combine with wax. For better candle storage, you should try to store in a cool and dry cupboard or shelfs , that are away from sunlight exposure.
